Shakira Says Her Single, “Hips Don’t Lie” Changed Her Story

The Global Pop icon Shakira just revealed “Hips Don’t Lie”  is her biggest career hit, a song that nearly never saw the light of the day. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, she revealed that “Hips Don’t Lie” almost never made it onto her 2005 album Oral Fixation, Vol. 2. Despite the album already hitting stores, Shakira felt so strongly about the track. So, she convinced Sony Music to recall and repackage it.

Also, she told Jimmy Fallon, “I had a dream about Wyclef Jean. She further said, “It wasn’t even a crazy dream, just a random one. Then, my manager called and said Wyclef wanted to work with me.” The two met, collaborated, and the result was immediate magic. “I knew I had a hit,” Shakira said. “I told Donny Ienner [Sony Music exec] to pull the album off the shelves. He said no. I begged. I said, ‘Trust me, this is it.’”

Released in February 2006, Hips Don’t Lie soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks. Thus, the song became a global anthem, redefining Shakira’s career. “It changed my story,” she said. “People started calling me Shakira twice. Some even used lie detectors on me”.

In other news, Popmedley recently shared a post on how to watch and vote for American Idol’s top 8 contestants.

Also, Shakira and Wyclef Jean recently reunited on The Tonight Show to celebrate the song’s 20th anniversary with a live performance. The moment doubled as a celebration of Shakira’s current Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. The tour, which has already sold out 11 shows in Mexico City, ranks as the No. 1 tour in the world for two consecutive months.

Additionally, the tour features a massive 145-person crew and 93 tons of production gear. This makes it one of the largest Latin American tours ever. “It’s been a year in the making,” she told Fallon. “From Antología to Whenever, Wherever to Hips Don’t Lie, fans are dancing, singing, even crying.”

In retrospect, Hips Don’t Lie truly did change Shakira’s story.
