BLACKPINK’s Jennie Goes Solo with Columbia Records, Makes Comeback with New Single in October

The global music scene is buzzing with excitement as Jennie, Blackpink’s star and a global pop icon, gears up for her highly-anticipated solo comeback in October. To mark this exciting new chapter, the superstar has signed a deal with USA Columbia Records. A record label that’s home to sensational stars like Beyoncé, John Legend, and Harry Styles.

The news broke out just a day after her solo label, ODD ATTELIER (OA), released an intriguing clip that left fans speculating about what’s to come. On September 9, OA made it official, confirming the October comeback in a statement to Korean media.

Jennie’s comeback follows a string of successful collaborations that have spotlighted her immense cross-cultural appeal. In March 2024, she partnered with American rapper Matt Champion from Brockhampton on the track Slow Motion, featured on Champion’s debut album, Mika’s Laundry.

April saw Jennie take another giant leap in cementing her global stardom with the release of “Spot!. A collaboration with South Korean rapper Zico. The song was an immediate hit, reaching the top of the Circle Digital Chart in South Korea while making waves internationally. “Spot!” reached an impressive No. 24 on the Billboard Global 200 and climbed to No. 8 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart. This again proves Jennie’s appeal on a global scale.

In the United States, “Spot!” secured a historic debut at No. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart, marking Zico’s first-ever US chart-topper and Jennie’s second, after her record-setting solo debut, SOLO, in 2018.

Jennie’s solo journey is nothing short of spectacular. Drawing inspiration from powerhouse artists like Rihanna, Billie Eilish, and Harry Hudson, her unique sound and style continue to evolve. Her debut single, SOLO, topped Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart in 2018. This sets the stage for a string of chart-topping releases. In June 2023, she dropped the track One of the Girls with The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, which has since surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify. The song was also certified Platinum by the RIAA and reached No. 18 on the Billboard Pop Airplay chart. Her October release wasn’t short of expectations either. “You & Me” debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart, further solidifying her status as a global icon.

Beyond her solo endeavors, Jennie continues to make waves as a member of BLACKPINK. The group has not only shattered numerous Billboard records. They’ve also become the first K-pop group to headline the iconic Coachella festival. Their music videos consistently rack up billions of views, establishing their dominance in the global music scene.

One of the things that sets Jennie apart is her genuinely international background. Born in South Korea, she spent her formative years studying in New Zealand before returning to Seoul to train under YG Entertainment. This multicultural upbringing equipped Jennie with a global perspective that resonates with fans worldwide. Jennie’s ability to bridge cultures can also be attributed to her strong brand presence. She’s a regular name on the Korean Business Research Institute’s Brand Power Ranking. She also broke a record in 2021 as the first Korean to hit 50 million followers on Instagram.

As October approaches, speculation is rife about the direction Jennie will take with this release. Given her track record of chart-topping hits, successful collaborations, and diverse musical influences, expectations are sky-high for this new release. Amidst the anticipation, one thing is certain: Jennie Kim is prepared to make history once again, and the world is eagerly waiting to listen.
